Candidate specification

Candidates will have no experience of delivering operator training. All candidates should have the ability and potential to become competent instructors.

Candidates must provide documentary evidence of having successfully completed a basic operator training course for the appropriate machine type within the 36 months preceding the course start date. (there is no requirement for this to be an RTITB accredited operator training course, although this is recommended; however, the course attended must be delivered by an instructor registered with an ABA member). Candidates must also have successfully completed the eTruck e-learning theory course within the 36 months preceding the course start date.

In addition, it is strongly recommended that candidates are able to provide information to the training provider on a minimum of 6 months’ industrial experience of operating lift trucks.

Training providers should consider the candidates’ literacy and numeracy levels prior to acceptance on the instructor course – as a guide, instructor-candidates should be able to achieve a minimum Level 2 in numeracy and literacy. You can find guidance on numeracy and literacy levels at the following sites:

Consideration should also be given to the requirements of the instructor role and the personal characteristics necessary for success. Instructing is a vocation, requiring a degree of commitment, responsibility, discipline, self-reflection and the flexibility to work under dynamic conditions.

The role will best suit those who are prepared to meet these requirements.

Re-Registration

Instructor training1 – 6 Candidates

Instructor training Accelerated: open only to candidates with current or recently expired (last 12 months) RTITB registration: 3 days (14 training hours)

Instructor training Regular: Open to candidates with current, or expired (within the last 24 months) RTITB registration: 5 days (28 training hours)

*The accelerated 3-day course option offers the opportunity for highly experienced instructors who deliver training on a regular basis to re-register following a shortened course of training.

The syllabus of this course offers only the examined components of the regular course, plus a short preparation time.

Training providers should ensure:

  • Candidates are of a high level of experience and skill, sufficient to pass the examined components of the course with little or no remedial tuition
  • Candidates receive the in-class lesson delivery assignment code in good time, so that they can prepare their lesson before attending the course
  • Candidates are aware of the need for and engaged in continual personal study and development, including keeping abreast of changes in legislation, training requirements and best practices, etc.
  • Candidates and employers are briefed regarding the shortened nature of the course and the demands this places on the candidates.

Conversion

Instructor training1 – 6 Candidates

Instructor training Minimum Course Duration 5 days (28 training hours)*

*Candidates attending a 5-day Conversion course, whose current registration is with a non-ABA member organisation, will be required to successfully complete the Advanced Operational Competence Test – this is usually completed early in the course, on the first day.

Objective

By the end of this course, the candidate(s) will be able to:

  • Demonstrate their instructional ability to conduct practical lessons using appropriate practical instructional skills
  • Demonstrate their instructional ability to conduct in-class lessons using appropriate classroom instructional skills
  • Discuss their associated knowledge of health and safety, legislation, instructional skills, candidate selection and practical skills testing
  • Prepare, schedule and deliver an appropriate operator training course, working independently under workplace environment conditions
  • Prepare, set up and conduct a Basic Operating Skills Test
  • Follow administration and documentation procedures appropriate to running an operator training course, including developing a familiarity with RTITB procedures and the RTITB TrainingFriend app.

  • Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER 1998) – Requires all work equipment (including forklifts) to be suitable, well maintained, and only used by trained people.

  • Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER 1998) – Ensures that lifting equipment and attachments are strong, stable, and inspected regularly.
